This course meets the qualifications for 3 hours of continuing education credit for LMFT’s, LCSW’s, LPCCs, LEPs and RNs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences. Designed for supervisors, clinicians and students who want an annual update on recent trends and developments in legal and ethical issues from a clinical perspective, this course is intended for those who have already completed coursework on law and ethics in social work. It focuses on the complexities and dilemmas when dealing in the field with children, teens, couples and families. This course covers issues of diversity via the teaching of core ethical values and principles as well as through case examples using couples and families from varied ethnic, racial, religious, and economic backgrounds. Goals: The goals of this course are the following:- to provide an annual update on changes in laws or ethics that apply to the practice of mental health professionals practicing in the state of California.
- To explore a specific issue in depth that has legal, ethical and clinical applications in order to enhance the expertise of the participants. This year’s topic is the appropriate use of self-disclosure in treatment.
- List 3 new California laws that went into effect in 2019 or will go into effect in January 2020 relevant to mental health practitioners.
- Identify 3 reasons why appropriate self-disclosure in therapy that can strengthen the therapeutic alliance.
- Identify 3 reasons why therapist self-disclosure may be unethical or harmful.
- Discuss the implications of how the use of smart phones and social media has generated new norms and expectations from clients.
