Ethical Therapy In a Polarized World

Training by Debra Manchester, LCSW

Therapists are increasingly being asked for help from clients who are in emotional distress about the state of the world. Anxiety in children and teens has skyrocketed. Difficult topics—immigration/deportation, DEI education, abortion, gender affirming care, global warming, vaccinations—have not only polarized our political system but have caused conflict within families, couples and communities. What are the ethical issues and dilemmas that arise especially when working with clients whose values clash with our own?

Come join a lively discussion with fellow clinicians about the intersection of the current socio-political landscape and effective psychotherapy.

Religion & Spirituality in Therapy: Clinical & Ethical Guidelines

2024 training by Debra Manchester, LCSW

Many clinicians have long recognized the important role that religious and/or spiritual beliefs and practices play in the role of healing and transformation—both for good and for ill. Now there is solid research indicating that the vast majority of our clients want to address this subject in psychotherapy. Unfortunately, most therapists receive little to no training on how to do this. This workshop will explore how to address religion/spirituality both effectively and ethically.

Psychedelics & Cutting-Edge Therapies: The Ethics & Clinical Implications of Treatment & Referrals

2023 training by Debra Manchester, LCSW

The past several years have brought significant developments in the effective treatment of depression and anxiety disorders. There has been a resurgence of interest and greater acceptance of the therapeutic potential of psychedelics, especially ketamine, for treatment of depression and PTSD. Many therapists are not currently prepared to respond to clients’ questions. The goals of this course are twofold: first, to summarize current theories and research so that clinicians can incorporate them into their current practice or be able to make appropriate referrals; second, to outline the legal and clinical issues related to these newer forms of treatment.

Bridging the Divides: Clinical & Ethical Dilemmas in Psychotherapy & in  Our World

2021 training by Debra Manchester, LCSW

The last few years have brought unprecedented challenges, losses, and conflicts. Not only with COVID–as if that weren’t enough–but with a country divided over mandates, economic fears, heightened racial tensions, political stand-offs, and a looming threat to democracy. These fractious divides have played out in our therapy offices and in our personal lives. This year’s Law and Ethics workshop (I have been doing very different topics for the last 15 years) was driven by my personal quest to find a deeper, more systemic understanding of what is going on and to offer some hope for ways to create bridges across the divide.
